Opinion piece: As we all know, nobody anticipated that this year is going to be ruled by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic didn’t not only put our daily lives to a stop, but it has also tremendously changed your pets’ lives as they had their normal routine. And we all know that it can be quite hard on them when we need to change their routines. Keeping your pets on a strict schedule will not only help you but it will make them feel comfortable and less anxious. Because you are all so whelmed by things and thinking about all of your family and friends, it is often that pets become neglected. That will not only lead to accidents at home, they will often become depressed and start acting out. Here are some awesome tips that will help you keep your pets healthy and happy during this scary pandemic.

Create Their Personal Supply
Because our pets don’t use toilet paper, you won’t have trouble stocking up on their stuff such as food, treats, litter or anything they need on a daily basis. Unfortunately, because everyone is giving over the top and ordering more than they actually need, many food manufacturers are experiencing shortages and shipping delays. It is better to buy smaller packs of their foods and buy them as they run out rather than switching them to something new because that can cause their stomachs to get messed up. If their food is completely sold out look for ones that are made by the same brand and have similar ingredients as well as nutritional requirements. Another thing that you should have just in case are flea, tick or heartworm treatments just in case.
They Also Need First Aid Kits
Just as us people, they will also need to have their own first aids kits. They come in handy especially now when it is quite hard to schedule emergency visits at the vet. Make sure that you have these things:
- Sterile saline
- Antibiotics
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Large syringes
- Benadryl
- Bandages
- Muzzles
Once you have your kit put together make sure that you educate yourself on procedures that might come in handy if something does happen to them. Make sure that if they are on a medication that you talk to your vet about having all the prescriptions to pick them up.
Keep Them Away from Toxic Lawn and Garden Chemicals
Since we are all stuck at home many people who live in apartments have to take their pets on fake lawns that can be toxic. If you are one of those people you can look into house and land packages that will help you find an appropriate place for you and your pet. But if you are someone who has a large backyard you might be redoing it as you have all the free time in the world. If you are, make sure that they are staying away from any pesticides or toxic chemicals that you might be using on the grass.
Keep Their Brains Active
Imagine how bored your pet is when us humans are bored out of our minds while being cooped up in our homes. But that is easily fixable, all you need to do is play a few fun games with them that will make both you and your pet less bored. There are so many games you can play such as food puzzles, teaching them new skills or ordering and letting them discover new toys.

Stick to An Exercise Routine
We all heard about all the jokes about gaining a ton of weight during quarantine, but don’t forget that if you are gaining weight your pet is probably too. Even though you can’t go out to a dog park or take them everywhere with you, that doesn’t mean that both of you should be laying around all day. Make them agility courses with furniture and different items that you have laying around and have some fun. If you don’t have many breakable things around your house you can even chase each other thought your home. There are so many ways you and your pet can be active while at home.
In the end, as long as you are keeping them safe and stimulated, they will be healthy and happy. They are probably loving it as you are home all day and having an endless supply of cuddles. Take care of yourself so you can take care of them.
