Guest post: Dogs, like humans, can suffer from anxiety which affects the quality of their lives. The most common form is separation anxiety. A dog can show symptoms of stress whenever separated from its primary caregiver. But anxiety could be triggered by other events like loud noises and reminders of past trauma.

It takes love and plenty of practical measures to help your dog overcome anxiety. So, start by showing him some love – hug him.

Previously, we have suggested various ways to help make your dog feel better. But these solutions are physical or based on synthetic inhibitors and medications. We will inform you about easy-to-find and easy-to-prepare natural remedies to dog anxiety.

Flower essence

Since dogs face anxiety just like humans, it is not a surprise that flowers are a remedy for both.

That feeling you get of tranquility and calm whenever you see and smell flowers, dogs too can get it. And it is not you (or the dog) it is the flowers.

Figuring out which flowers are effective and how to use them every time you leave for the office is an uphill task.

Fortunately, you do not have to do that. Manufacturers of bottled flower essence have already done the hard work for you. They are non-toxic, gentle, and effective. But the best part is, they leave your home smelling great, and you can never overdose.

Essential oils

Still, on plants, which have an amazing effect on our emotions, Essential oils from plants such as frankincense and lavender can have a calming effect on your dog.

But it would be a challenge to stock up the herb at home. Manufacturers of essential oil diffusers have made it easy. You can safely spread the scent of the oils in a room without having to go through the extraction process.

Other dog-calming solutions that use essential oils include:

  • Essential oil collar
  • Rubbing a tablespoon of olive oil on the dog’s neck and chest.
  • Administering hemp oil.

Due to high concentration levels, it is advisable never to apply essential oils directly on the dog. But you can mix and match different oils and keep checking until you get the desired calming effect.

Make your pooch some tea

Chamomile tea works wonders for the human nervous system. It has a similar effect on anxious dogs, and it is great for their digestive systems.

If you cannot get your hands on chamomile plants to brew the tea, consider adding a few drops of pasque flower tincture to the dog’s water supply. It works like magic targeting the nervous system and keeps the dog calm.

Kava kava

Traditional Polynesians prepared different brews using the kava herb to create a calming drink. You can add a little tincture or powder form to the dog’s water. About 300mg of the herb to the water or food of an adult dog, or half the amount for a pup should be sufficient. It is safe for the dog and highly effective in calming restless dogs.

Other herbs that work in the same way include John’s Wort and Valerian.

Chinese medicine

The Chinese are renowned for providing several herbs and natural medicines that solve human ailments. The same applies to pet issues. There are various Chinese herbal medicines available and have been proven safe for pets.

You can take your pick, but before you do, consult an open-minded vet about the issue and have a discussion about it.

Exercise and company

Exercise and company are the best remedies for anxiety in dogs. Always remember that a tired dog is a happy dog. So do not skip or skimp on exercise. If your dog has separation anxiety, and you are the sole companion, consider signing him up to a doggy daycare facility or linking him up with a pet sitter.

If the dog still shows signs of stress when you leave (despite being in the company of other loving people), try an Original Calming Bed ™ and throw in your shirt. Your scent on it will help him to remember that you are still nearby.

A final word on natural dog anxiety

Dogs can become anxious for a wide variety of reasons. The remedies above may not adequately deal with the issue. They will, however, help you to calm him down whenever he displays symptoms of stress.

As a good parent, you will want to get to the bottom of the situation so that you can root it out.

Separation anxiety is primarily a behavioral issue. You can opt to DIY and attempt to correct the behavior. Or you can work with a dog behavior specialist to help him overcome the anxiety.

Look out for your dog’s best interest. Try one or a combination of these remedies while you work on the behavior. It is the best solution for anxiety in dogs.
